What exactly are polyols?

Have you ever noticed the label “polyols” while reading our packaging texts? If so, you might have asked yourself, like many others: “Wait, why is there alcohol in my sweetener?” But don’t worry! Today we’ll explain what polyols actually are – and why they aren’t as bad as they sound.

Alcohol or sugar? Neither!

“Polyols” – that’s just another name for sugar alcohols. It may sound worse than it is, but don’t worry: sugar alcohols are often used to sweeten foods – and they have nothing to do with regular sugar or drinking alcohol. Sugar substitutes like xylitol and erythritol belong to the carbohydrate group, but unlike sugar, they contain significantly fewer calories and don’t contribute to tooth decay.

Completely safe!

So there’s no need to worry. Sugar alcohols can be enjoyed by just about anyone: even pregnant women, children, or recovering alcoholics can safely consume them. In other words, you can simply continue sweetening and enjoying your favorite xylitol and erythritol products!
