Xylitol – the Sugar Substitute Your Teeth Will Love

Xylitol – a sugar substitute that fights tooth decay. Xylitol (English: xylitol) is no longer an unfamiliar term. This sugar substitute, belonging to the family of sugar alcohols, has long established itself in the market. Today, xylitol is not only found in chewing gum but also in toothpaste, candies, or chocolate. Xylitol has the same sweetness as regular sugar, so it tastes just as sweet. Its caloric value is about 40% lower than that of sugar. For diabetics or dietary approaches such as low-carb, xylitol is a suitable alternative because it is metabolized in the body independently of insulin. It is therefore well tolerated and can be consumed in larger amounts.

Xylitol Occurs Naturally

However, consuming higher doses may initially have a laxative effect, so a daily dose of 50–70 g is recommended at first. After a period of adaptation, a daily intake of around 200 g is usually well tolerated. Xylitol is a natural sugar substitute found in corn, fruits, and mushrooms, and it can even be produced naturally by humans during sugar metabolism. This helps the body recognize, absorb, and utilize xylitol. Xylitol, also known as “birch sugar,” is primarily extracted from corn—mainly in Asia—or from birch bark in Finland. There are no qualitative differences between the final products; personal preference regarding the source is more relevant.

Production Process

The production of xylitol is a complex process first discovered and carried out in 1891 by Emil Fischer. The process begins by “dissolving” the raw material—corn cobs or wood chips—in water. During hydrogenation, xylose is converted into xylitol. The mixture is then heated to evaporate the water, producing a concentrate, which is crystallized in a centrifuge in the next step. Finally, the remaining water is removed, and after drying and sieving, pure xylitol is obtained.

Dental Benefits

Xylitol has primarily established itself in dental and oral care. Chewing gum, in addition to providing a sweet and fresh taste reminiscent of menthol, also offers dental benefits. Unlike regular sugar, xylitol does not provide a breeding ground for bacteria that convert sugar into acid. These acids deplete minerals from our teeth, leading to brittle teeth, bad breath, and cavities.
